The internationally renowned double bassist and composer Dieter Ilg is releasing his new work “Motherland”. He is supported by the master trumpeter Till Brönner, the German pianist Rainer Böhm and the French drummer Patrice Héral. As the cover suggests, Ilg (with a traditional Black Forest Bollenhut on his head) transforms the connection to his homeland and Mother Earth in his musical expression. In addition to his musical contribution, Brönner is also responsible for the photos used in the artwork. In collaboration with numerous musicians such as Randy Brecker, Charlie Mariano, Peter Erskine, Vince Mendoza and many more, Dieter Ilg has already released 25 albums as leader or co-leader and a number of recordings as a sideman. On “Motherland” he unites his working band, consisting of Rainer Böhm and Patrice Héral, for a new, orchestrated prank. They have been on their musical path together for 16 years. According to the bandleader, the secret of their chemistry is their openness to letting things happen in the moment. “Motherland” is, on the one hand, a homage to their home roots and, on the other, a reflection of what the bassist, who comes from Offenburg in Baden and grew up there, has heard, perceived and experienced. Particularly noteworthy is the song “Schwarzwaldfahrt”, in which Ilg transforms the originally upbeat melody by German pianist Horst Jankowski into a completely new, nostalgic direction with an authentic second-line groove. One of the highlights is provided by Till Brönner with outstanding trumpet solos. Overall, the album unfolds an impressive variety between harmonious, relaxing sounds, tenderly fragile and stormy bass solos, fabulously rubato and spectacular, multi-dimensional piano passages as well as complex drum sequences, wild percussive beats and sonorous grooves.
