Born in 1992 in Gladbeck, Lennart Allkemper began turning heads early: at just 12 years old, he won first prize at “Jugend jazzt NRW,” followed by early studies at the Folkwang University in Essen and a spot in the NRW Youth Jazz Orchestra, with whom he recorded Way Up—a project that earned the 2013 WDR Jazz Prize. He went on to join the German National Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and continued his studies at the Cologne University of Music and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Today, Allkemper leads his own quartet, featuring longtime musical companions from western Germany: bassist Stefan Rey (Wuppertal/Hückeswagen) and drummer Niklas Walter (Hamm). With Awakening, Allkemper presents a confident bandleader debut, featuring twelve original compositions that showcase both his versatility as a saxophonist and his maturity as a composer. The album delivers a rich and cohesive blend of jazz and pop influences, remaining stylistically focused while offering a broad emotional palette. The inspired quartet is joined by acclaimed American pianist Billy Test, a member of the WDR Big Band since 2018.
